a half-asleep conversation at the dead of night
Are you asleep?
I ask for the sixth time
Your heavy breathing pauses briefly and your eyes open momentarily, to answer
No
Then back again.
Are you asleep?
You ask me, 3 minutes later
I pause, woken by your speech,
Eyes heavy lidded, begging to be shut again,
And I answer
Do you want to sleep?
No
Neither do I
I close my eyes
And return to an attentive slumber
Glued to your chest like a magnet.
